We are such stuff as dreams are made on - and our little life is rounded with a sleep
This exhibition was exhibited at Sølvberget gallery in Stavanger, Norway from January to April 2024.
Produced during the summer of 2023 in Berlin, the project deals with homelessness and sleep, dream and is a continuation of a longer exploration of homelessness in Berlin. My approach has been a deep dive into the world of the homeless, their personal histories, thoughts on the present and future as individuals living on the margins of society. The project is a continuation of my documentary web based video and photo project entitled www.meinheim.org, which I produced during the corona pandemic in 2020 in Berlin.
The exhibition, titled after W. Shakespear's famous quote from "The Tempest", consists of photographs of sleeping homeless people in various parks and public places in Berlin. The project centres around the theme of sleep - dreams, imagination versus reality, the importance of sleep and dreams in the lives of the homeless, but also the idea that this is something we all share, regardless of who we are and where we are on the social ladder in society.
The project consists of 14 analogue photographs and two different video pieces. A documentary video essay about Manuell who lives in a tent in the Wannsee district which focus on his daily chores, what he does for a living and recollections from his childhood and upbringing. A second video piece encompasses fading memories and consists of various private photographs of unknown people, placed in chlorine baths, filming the process while the images slowly disappear and are erased. The vanishing images are accompanied by a cacophonous soundscape of murmuring voices of lived lives, music and fragments of things that once were.
Many thanks to all the homeless men and women which I had the privilege of portraying for my photo series.
